Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run
September 25, 1999
Runners: Rick Miller & Eric Kajiwara
Written by Eric Kajiwara

Four Over the Hill Track Club Members traveled to Wrightwood California to run the 1999 Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run.  Elaina McMahon, Monty Mackey, Rick Miller and Eric Kajiwara would test their mettle against the 100.53 mile course starting at Wrightwood and ending at Johnson Park in Pasadena.  This would be Rick Miller’s first attempt at a 100 miler.

The course crisscrosses Highway 2 until the 59.3 mile point at the Shortcut Saddle aid station.  From Shortcut the trail wanders through the San Gabriel Mountains down to the finish.  There is a cumulative elevation gain of 21,610 ft. and a cumulative loss of 26,700 ft.  The highest point on the course is Mt. Baden-Powell at 9,210ft.

The runners started at 5:00 am Saturday in the dark.  The morning temperature only required a short sleeve shirt, foretelling of high heat through Cooper canyon later in the day.  Elaina and Monty went for the gold right out of the chute.  After climbing to the top of Blue Ridge, sunrise allowed us to stow our flashlights until that night.

Both Rick and I had a rough time of it over Mt Williamson (25 to 29 miles) and through Cooper Canyon (29 to 38 miles) with no breeze and temperatures hovering in the high 80’s.  As the day progressed, temperatures dropped to more comfortable levels as we dropped down into Chilao Campground at the 53 mile mark.  At Chilao, we found Monty kicking back in his street clothes.  He had sprained his ankle in the first 10 miles of the race and had to drop out.
Our spirits had a boost because we picked up our pacers, Jo Kajiwara and Barb Miller, who would herd us the next 6.5 miles to the next aid station at Shortcut Saddle.  Again we followed our flashlights because it was passed sundown.

After arriving at Shortcut, we discovered Elaina had dropped because of back problems.  This was a disappointment for all because she had just passed Suzanne Brana (who was first place woman at Western States 100 this year) and was in first place when she had to turn back shortly after leaving Shortcut.  She was on her way to a first place finish and a sub-24 hour time.

From Shortcut, Rick and I picked up our second pacers, Randy Klassen and John Anderson who would prod us the next 15.25 miles to Chantry Flats.  Even though we have covered over 74 miles, runners usually call Chantry the "halfway point".  Andrew Mitchell and Mark McKinney assumed pacing duties from Chantry to the finish.

Even though it was 4:00 am when Rick and I left Chantry to climb Mt Wilson, we had problems because of dehydration.  We weren't drinking and taking salt as we should have during the night. Sunrise met us at the top of Tollhouse Road.  After a downhill to Idlehour (83.75 miles) it was a series of descents and climbs to Sam Merrill aid station (89.25 miles).  The sun resumed its intensity from Sam Merrill to the finish.

We hit the pavement with about a mile to the finish and were met by some of our ultra running friends; Liz Hodges, Bertha Marinaro and Shannon Lyons; who ran in with us.  We crossed under the finishing banner at 32:16 with 44 minutes to spare.  Rick finished his first 100 miler, and I finished my fourth AC 100.

Mucho thanks to our pacers and crew.  It made the experience much more pleasant (bearable?).
