Jingle Jog
8 Dec 2012

Again, we were lucky with beautiful weather for the Jingle Jog! Around 60 people turned up for the event  – it was good to see so many families with children of all ages and a good assortment of canine companions. Everyone did the standard Jingle Jog (a 5k-ish run up and down the road) with quite a few people opting in for the very mean elf’s addition to the basic 5K. Oh yes…there were push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, leaping about, zip lining, and a few dances with the elf.

Afterwards we shared baked ham, mimosas, and other treats. The little ones (and some of the big ones) roasted marshmallows.

Thanks everyone for the great turnout. We do have a little girls’ purple velvet jacket that was left behind, and a knit cap with a monkey’s face and ears. Please give me a call if these items belong to you – 375.2856.

Until next year! But beware…this elf gets meaner and meaner as time goes by :-)

The OTHTC 2012 Ultra was run December 2, 2012
The date for the 2013 OTHTC Ultra is December 1, 2013

A big congratulations to all of the 325 runners that braved fierce winds to finish the High Desert Ultra or the 30k run on Sunday!

One veteran local who ran on Sunday stated that she could not remember running in more brutal winds.  At the finish line, it became a constant challenge to keep the finish chute standing upright.  Eventually the fight seemed futile, and the stanchions were allowed to remain flopped over on the ground.

Ricardo Ramirez (pictured), 40, of Sun Valley, CA, won the 50k race in 3:39:00. Kate Martini Freeman of Los Angeles, 31, was the women’s winner in 4:31:30.  The military award went to Joe Baumgarte, 42, of Las Vegas, in a time of 4:37:07.

Winner of the 30k race was Fernando Blanco, age 33, from Encinitas.  He finished in 2:06:06.  Lisa Fink, 43, Valencia, was the first female finisher, in 2:38:56.

Jim Madonna traveled from Fairbanks, Alaska to obliterate the men’s 70-79 division course record in the 30K.  His time of 3:01:09 beats the old record of 3:48:57 set by Marvin Powers in 2001.  (Powers still holds the 80-89 division records in both the 50K and 30k.)

Of the 325 finishers, 228 completed the 50k, while 97 finished the 30k.

You can take a look at results by clicking 50k results and 30k results.

Tom Rafalski at the Highway Crossing aid station posted over 600 pictures on Picasa. You should be able to access them by clicking here.

2012ttwinners.jpgOTHTC Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving day 2012

About 475 runners, walkers and dogs participated in the Over the Hill Track Club Turkey Trot. All navigated the 3 mile course with the Brandon Haugen crossing the finish line in 16:23 for first place male. Kristy Park was first female in a finishing time of 22:10. Both received the coveted Rubber Chicken awards for their efforts.  We collected $530, and most of it will be donated to the Salvation Army for their Christmas baskets.  The OTHTC has done this the last couple of years as our way of giving back to the community.

Inaugural Big Bear Ridge Run
24 and 13 miles and 10K

OTHTC members Jo and Eric Kajiwara, Elaina McMahon and Mark McKinney brought home the bling. The 10K and 13 mile were out and backs and the 24 mile was a series of loops. All started with a heart starting 3 mile, 1000ft climb. The course was challenging with a rocky technical 3 mile finish.  Here are the OTHTC runner results:

10K
Jo Kajiwara 1st in 65+ AG 1:43:37.72

24 mile run
Mark McKinney 3rd in 40-44 AG 5:02:05.64
Elaina McMahon 1st in 55-59 AG 5:02:03.95
Eric Kajiwara 1st in 65+ AG 5:12:48.94
Also awarded 1st in the Race Ready Trail Run Series.

The Big Bear Ridge Run will be an annual run. Great job race director Tom Speigel!

Dirty 10k/5km Paul Weimholt Memorial Run
22 September, 2012

75 runners started the first annual Paul Weimholt memorial run. Thank you to everyone that came out and participated in the event. The event started just south of town at the intersection of brown road and 395. There was a 5km event and a 10km event that included single track trails and a few hills. The first place runner in the 5km event was Beverly woods. Shortly after Beverly arrived Greg Ostrom and a few others came charging down the road. These runners had signed up for the 10km event but something must have gone wrong as not nearly enough time had passed for them to be able to complete the course. Early reports from the aid station revealed that the front runners had been drawn off course and that the majority of the remaining runners had followed. A marked turn to the right at the beginning of a climb up through the boulders was missed.

Two runners, Dave Meade and Carol Meade, did complete the correct course for the 10km and were awarded first place men’s and women's award for the 10km. Sometimes it does pay to watch for the ribbon and listen closely to the race director. Several others went back out and completed an additional loop and or the original course as marked. The weather was perfect and the people were AWESOME. I think that Paul would have liked it. Thanks to everyone.

Over the Hill Track Club PCT Fun Run
Saturday, May 12th

Runners and hikers gathered at the Pacific Crest Trail intersection at Walker Pass. The air was crisp and slightly cool at 7:30am, however the sun was peaking over the mountains and promising a warm day. We ventured North on the PCT and began the immediate climb on the welcoming single track trail. After a nice climb, we were treated to views to the West and East and the trees provided pleasant shade for the morning’s excursion. It was a beautiful morning on a great trail with good people and tasty treats at the end. Isn’t this the essence of the OTHTC? The runners/hikers who enjoyed the PCT fun run to the Jenkins Plaque and back were:

American River 50 Mile Endutance Run
 April 7, 2012

Eric Kajiwara and Corky Furnish participated in the American River 50 Mile Endurance Run on April 7th.  The race starts in Sacramento near the College and ends at the Dam Overlook in Auburn.AR Finish.jpg  The first 27 miles are run on the asphalt bike path and the remainder of the course is on single track path with both sections following the American River.  The last three miles to the finish were on an uphill road.  Eric finished in 10:58:03, barely qualifying him to enter the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run lottery.  Runners need to finish a 50 mile race in under 11 hours to be able to enter the lottery.  Eric was paced for the last 1/8 mile by running legend Kathy D'Onofrio. Corky Furnish was unable to make the cut off time at Rattlesnake Bar and was pulled from the race at 41 miles.  Both runners were crewed by Jo Kajiwara and Della Delanda.
To get into WS, an applicant will enter the lottery along with 2000+ other runners and compete for about 400 open spots.  Tough odds.

We did get to visit with some running friends which included a local runner from the past, Kathy Griest, who is living and working in the Sacramento area.  She was crewing for a friend in the race.

The 2nd Annual OTHTC Prediction Run
Saturday, March 3, 2012

A total of 34 entrants completed the approximately 4.35 mile very hilly course.  The objective of the race was to predict your finish time with the winners being the ones who finished closest to their predicted time. The weather was absolutely beautiful and a great day for playing in the hills.

Carol Wolfe again exhibited her ability to predict her time with a difference of only 33 seconds between her predicted and finish time, finishing as overall and female winner.

Will Gossett completed the course with a difference of 1:04 between his predicted and finish time, capturing first for the male runners.

The results for all runners are here.

A shout out to Eric, Jo, and Brian Kajiwara and Randy Klassen for their assistance in putting on the run.

Jingle Jog
December 2011

This year's Jingle Jog was a record-breaker! Somewhere between 40 and 50 people attended. Perfect running weather and a few fun extras helped make it a great event. The standard course was an easy out and back of just under 3 miles. For those wanting a little something extra, they were treated to the "he-man/she-woman" version of the Jingle Jog. (click for more details) Afterwards, we ate food and enjoyed the weather. There was marshmallow roasting for the little ones, a trampoline to jump on, and the zip line was a big hit for kids of all ages. There were around 10 dogs who ran the course, too!

Thanks everyone, for coming out. You've brought the Jingle Jog back from extinction. I'd like to host it again next year - with a little help from the elves. Carol Wolfe

OTHTC High Desert Ultra and 30k

December 4, 2011
50K Ultra Results   30K Results

Another successful edition of the High Desert Ultra!  Once again we had a blast, sharing our backyard running  trails with fellow runners.  We had 326 of them sign up, and 295 finishers—219 in the 50K and 76 in the 30K.  Most of our runners came from Southern California, but we had 32 from out of state, and a few from as far away as Alaska, New York, and Pennsylvania!  Luckily, we were able to provide them with ideal running weather.  The nasty cold winds that had been bothering us for several days died sometime during the night before the race, and the day magically dawned cool and quiet.

First to finish in the 30k was Bartolome Sequen, 24, of Los Angeles.  His time of 2:03:09 was fast enough to capture the 20-24 age group course record.  Local runner Jennifer Williams was the top female 30k finisher, in 2:47:38.

Meanwhile, 50k winner Roberto Leonardo, 49, of Lancaster, was battling for the lead with eventual 2nd place finisher Ricardo Ramiez over the first 20 miles.  By Pack Rats’ aid station, however, Leonardo had developed a two-minute lead, and continued to pull away over the final miles.  His finish time was 3:32:00.  Leonardo is the owner of our 50k course record—3:16:37.

Bartolome Sequen                                                             Megan Laib

Megan Laib, 31, first-time ultramarathoner and Santa Monica resident, captured first place in the female 50k race, with a time of 3:52:10.   Megan finished fourth of all 50k runners, and now holds the 30-39 F division course record.

Winners of our military finisher awards were Joe Baumgarte of Las Vegas (50k, 4:59:49) and Ridgecrest runner Brett Pugsley (30k, 3:04:22).

OTHTC Halloween Run 2011

Over 40 runners and walkers, young and old, navigated the 3.1 mile course south of the College, at the Over the Hill Track Club Halloween Run. Many of the participants were in costume. Part of the fun during the event was the Kids Candy Dash where the little ones ran to witch's caldrons and grabbed candy out of them before the witches caught them.

OTHTC Members Work at BLM Public Lands Day

The OTHTC helped clean up a site at one of the shooting ranges located South of town. We removed approximately 3000 lbs of shotgun shells, and pistol and rifle brass, trash and shot up targets that included TVs, Satelite dishes, furniture, toilet fixtures and other unidentifiable objects. The BLM BBQ'd hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. The BLM is planning another clean up day in the spring.
